Culture

Students posing in their basketball and cheer uniforms

At BRICK Gateway Academy, we believe education is more than academics—  a school should reflect the cultural identities and lived experiences of its students and families. Our curriculum is rooted in Ubuntu principles of collective care, celebrates the rich history and achievements of Black and Brown leaders, and fosters a culture of learning that builds character, leadership, and purpose.

Community

At BRICK, we are more than just a school—we are a united community of students, families, teachers, community members, and leaders. We know that individual success is deeply tied to the success of the collective. At BRICK, we embody Ubuntu’s principle of interconnectedness and mutual support by ensuring families have the resources they need to thrive. From personalized student support to partnerships with local organizations, we go beyond academics to strengthen the well-being of our entire community.

BRICK prepares students for success through rigorous academics, leadership development, and experiential learning opportunities like internships and inter-sessions. With six years of alumni support and the BRICK network’s commitment to economic mobility and equity, we ensure students don’t just graduate—they thrive as leaders, visionaries, and change-makers in their communities and beyond.

Voices from our community

“I chose BRICK because I wanted my child to see people like her in authority. Having Black instructors and administration has furthered the idea that she can do absolutely anything.”
BRICK Parent
“What trips up a lot of students from first-generation and lower socio-economic backgrounds, its not that they cant go to the classroom and figure out what the professor is talking about… its persistence. Higher education demands the ability to recognize when you need to see the professor or go to the campus writing center. We work hard to build our students resiliency so they can be successful when the stakes are at their highest.”
Joddie Iyalekhue
Director College Access & Success Team
“The work that I do at BRICK Gateway helps diminish the opportunity gap. I am able to provide my students with opportunities that open doors to college and career.”
Marie Charles
Assistant Director of College Readiness & Persistence
“I chose teaching because I want to make a tangible difference in the lives of young people. I see the potential in every student and I know that education is the key to unlocking their future. At BRICK Gateway, I’m surrounded by a team that shares this vision—working together to create a space where students not only learn but thrive."

FAQs

Learn more about the application and enrollment process.

What is the Newark Common App?

The Newark Common App is a centralized online portal for families to enroll at participating schools. The portal provides families and schools with a seamless, and transparent process for applying to the school of their choice.

How long does it take to apply, and what should I expect?

Applying is easy and only takes 5 minutes. Simply complete one application with basic information and rank your school choices. Mark BRICK Gateway Academy as your first choice. After submitting your application, you will be included in the lottery system, which matches students with schools based on their preferences.

What are the next steps after I complete my application?

If you apply by the March 17th deadline, you will receive your match letter by mid-April. You can also access results online via your Newark Common App account. Families can begin registering at their new school immediately.

Our Scholar Enrollment team will contact you by telephone and/or email to confirm your match and support the registration process. Once you accept your seat at BRICK Gateway Academy, our team will reach out to collect the required documentation to complete registration.

The application reopens on March 24. You can still submit an application, and your match will be processed via waitlist pulls. You will be notified by telephone or email if you’re matched via the waitlist. Our Scholar Enrollment team will work with you to complete registration.

How are students matched, and will my student receive their first choice?

The system will match each student with the best possible school based on the family’s choices and the Common App’s enrollment policies. The only reason a Newark student would not get into their first choice would be if the school does not have enough seats for all applicants. When a student does not receive his or her first choice, the matching process will move down the student’s list of schools in order to place the student in their highest-ranked school with available seats.

What if I missed the initial enrollment deadline? What is the waitlist?

Yes, you can continue to apply after the initial March 17 deadline. The application reopens for phase 2 of enrollment on March 24 and runs through September. Phase 2 applications are processed on a rolling basis.

For applications submitted during phase 2, your match will be processed via the waitlist. You will be notified by telephone or email when you’re matched. Our Scholar Enrollment team will work with you to complete registration.

Can my scholar be matched to a school that isn’t listed on his/her application?

No, students receive a single offer to the highest-ranked school on their list possible. If you do not receive a match, your scholar will be added to the waitlist for schools ranked on your application.
